Txengo Studio worked on the design and development of China Airlines’ new Boeing 787-9 Premium Economy cabin, part of a wider cabin programme spanning Business Class, Premium Economy and Economy.

Inspired by the theme “Starlit Mountain City,” the design draws on the atmosphere of Taiwan’s mountain towns after dark where landscape, light and the warmth of the city come together.

Rather than translating these references literally, we explored how a sense of Taiwan could be expressed through colour, material, pattern, light and detail. The Mountain City Nightscape seat fabric subtly shifts in character under different lighting conditions, recalling the luminous atmosphere of Jiufen. Metallic detailing is balanced with warm leather textures, creating a dialogue between contemporary technology and cultural warmth.

This story continues through the smaller details of the passenger experience. The tray table carries the persimmon woodgrain language found across the China Airlines fleet, drawing on traditional Taiwanese symbolism associated with prosperity and fulfilment. Materials, finishes and individual touchpoints were considered together to create a cabin that balances comfort and functionality with its own distinctive character.

Working closely with China Airlines and the programme partners, Txengo translated the creative vision within the technical and certification requirements of aviation creating a Premium Economy experience that feels distinctly Taiwanese, yet contemporary and international.

The Premium Economy cabin represents one chapter of the wider Boeing 787-9 design story.
